OKLAHOMA STATE OF MIND
words & music by William J Norman
Listen to an MP3 of "OKLAHOMA STATE OF MIND"
We had a fight. She broke my heart. I thought I needed a fresh start.
Somewhere new where I could croon a country ditty.
Then a voice came from the dark: "Do a show in Central Park."
I hopped a flight that very night to New York City.
When I arrived at the hotel, I went to the desk and rang the bell.
Some funny guy thought he would try to take my hat.
I said, "Mister let me guess, you ain't never been out west.
Might I suggest you never ever, ever try a thing like that."
Well I rode in to Manhattan in a checkered yellow cab an'
then I knew I was in trouble right away
'Cuz nobody's wearing boots and all the women dress in suits
and I just don't know how long I'm gonna stay
See the buildings are so high that you can't hardly see the sky
I guess a country boy like me is out of luck
All the people ride around in a tunnel in the ground
so ya never seen a single pick up truck
Well if I can make it here then I'll buy you all a beer
But this country singing work is hard to find
They don't got no Honky Tonks. No, not even in the Bronx
Guess I'm in an Oklahoma state of mind
So I'm singing on the corner but I'm feeling like a forner
everybody's talking funnier 'an me
And the people passing by they won't look you in the eye
'cuz they're running like they got somewhere to be
Sure they got some fancy food but since the service was so rude
it really made me miss my Daddy's Bar-B-Q
I'm a man of resources but they ran out of horses.
Tell me, what's a good 'ol boy like me to do?
Well if I can make it here then I'll buy you all a beer
But this country singing work is hard to find
There ain't nothing I'm afraid of but I know what I'm made of
And I'm in an Oklahoma state of mind
(solo)
There ain't no wide open places and they got no parking spaces
and you can't find a decent rodeo
All the folks act amazed when I say where I was raised
Oklahoma isn't just a silly Broadway show
The other day I did some tourin' and I found it reassurin'
when I visited ol' Lady Liberty
But the part I liked the best is I think she's facing west
but I'm damn sure that's how it oughta be
(solo)
Well I think I'll settle down in a quiet, country town
And I'll leave the air pollution far behind
The museums were exquisite, it's a nice place to visit
But I'm in an Oklahoma state of mind
